Making Vegan Salmon Out Of Tofu!
I recently saw a video from @Goodful where @Merle O’Neal made a recipe from @BOSH.TV (whew… is that enough creators in one post) hahah She made their Vegan Tofu Salmon, and honestly it looked pretty good, so I wanted to give it a try! Like always though I wanted to make my own version, see if there was anything I could do to make it more like fish. Its already pretty awesome on its own so lets see if we can improve it.

Goodful video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onNDMBr_M4w
Bosh video https://www.instagram.com/p/CKCNNNWDf5K/

The improved version I came up with is simply
2 piece of extra firm pressed tofu
1 teaspoon mushroom extract
1 tablespoon protein powder
1 tablespoon methycellulose
1/2 cup beat juice
1 cup water

Top with
Capers to tastes
1 teaspoon caper liquid
Lemon zest or squeeze of lemon
1 splash of white wine or a white wine vinegar
Dill to taste
Salt to taste

Do you think freezing the tofu would allow the more flavor to come in and flake like salmon

I really appreciate the level of effort but these all look utterly repulsive. I'd be tempted to either not eat fishy things at all, or just eat ethically raised real fish quite rarely if this is the alternative

You could make salmon croquettes with the ground mixture.

I just watched your video on the fish leaf for scallop which is older than this one, so why not use the leaf in your marinade?

Is there a vegan nam pla sauce you could use to marinate? The soy and mushroom certainly umamai but fish has a stronger flavour which you would be expecting when told you are going to be eating 'salmon'.

I make (smoked) salmon out of cooked sliced carrots.. marinated in olive oil with vinegar, soy sauce, onion powder, pepper and… the special ingredient…algae oil! That gives the fish flavour.. because… guess what.. algae taste like fish.. why? Because fish eat algae… so fish does not actually taste like fish but like algae!🤩

I made this dish a ton of times and it became a family fav for sure but I usually do it by cutting into "fish fingers" and then also cutting diagonally almost all the way through using a set of chopsticks to keep me from cutting completely. This gives me a lot of space for the taste to go through and the texture of the "meat".

The problem with when a vegan says it tastes great or "just like real salmon"… is they haven't tasted real salmon in years so… Just sayin'!

You can’t make vegan salmon if it’s not actual salmon so technically there’s no such thing 🙏🏼

Salmon is a very oily fish. You should add some oil and dukes granules would give it more of a fishy/ocean flavor

thoughts on using ur meat tenderiser on tofu so that the flavour can permeate better?

Where is the fishy flavour coming from? Just because it looks like salmon doesn’t make it taste like fish. I don’t get this one

Maybe try to dry the tofu, and then take little pieces and press them, kinda like making a flaky pastry!

I have done tofu in a honey teriyaki marinade. It didn’t look like salmon BUT it tasted delish!

ok , so i really do hate to sound negative , i have watched quiet a few of your videos , I understand fake bacon and even taco meat . there are health benefits to these things , but fish is full of healthy proteins and oils , if someone likes salmon so much why go threw the extra steps , not to mention salmon is not going extinct anytime soon , I love what ur doing , but why is this better and why am i so entertained and want to do this ?

For better color, you can add carrots to the beet juice (or, if you prefer, some yellow food coloring). Also, to get a piece to hold well and get that extra coloring inside, you can place the tofu piece between two chopsticks, so the knife doesnt fully cut it. Finally, if you have some leftover nori, you can simply crush it and add it to the marinade, for that extra fish flavor 🙂

I wonder…if it would be more effective if you stab the firm tofu with a fork several times all over so it would allow the flavor to permeate a lot better

I am watching all out of order but I just watched your meat tenderizer video and what if you used that method with the tofu to allow it to absorb more flavor then cut it into slices to achieve the desired texture.

When I was growing up we were served "salmon patties" which were kind of like crab cakes.

I would try that with your version you made with the food processor.

Food is a universal language that anyone can understand. But if you want fish eat fish if you want a burger ( beef formed into a patty). But I’m not understanding, how people say they don’t want to eat meat but make things to replicate it. I respect vegans because my mother is one and she has been one for over 50 years. Just be true to yourself and you won’t have to do this.
